The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District hosts its 15th annual Spring Native Plant Sale on Saturday, April 25, at the Tualatin Hills Nature Center (15655 SW Millikan Way, Beaverton). The free event takes place from 10 am to 2 pm.
Native plants are an ideal way to create a beautiful backyard habitat for birds, butterflies, pollinators and other wildlife. Once established, they can flourish with less care, water, fertilizer and pesticide than non-native ornamental plants.
“We are fortunate to have a beautiful array of native plants in our region,” said Karen Munday, program coordinator at the Tualatin Hills Nature Center. “You can easily find the right native plant for any spot in your garden.”
Gardeners can select from more than 150 species of trees, shrubs, ground covers and perennials and talk to knowledgeable nature center staff about building the perfect garden oasis. A resource fair will provide an opportunity for community partners to demonstrate how native plants reduce pesticide usage, impact wildlife, and support water conservation.
A small selection of native plants -- including trilliums and other early-blooming wildflowers -- are available now at the Nature Center during business hours (8:30 am to 5 pm on weekdays and 9 am to 5 pm on weekends).
The Spring Native Plant Sale is sponsored by the Friends of the Tualatin Hills Nature Park. Proceeds will support environmental education programs and future improvements at the Tualatin Hills Nature Park, a 222-acre wildlife reserve in the heart of Beaverton.
The Nature Center provides nature education programs for children, adults and families – including summer camps – throughout the year. For more information about the Native Plant Sale or other THPRD nature programs, call 503-629-6350.
