THPRD closes on purchase of William Walker school parcel
July 02, 2014
The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District has completed the purchase of about 1.7 acres of land from the Beaverton School District.
The property, on the west side of William Walker Elementary School at 11940 SW Lynnfield Lane, is directly adjacent to THPRD’s Cedar Hills Park, which currently encompasses 10.3 acres. It will be used as part of a bond measure-funded project to expand and improve the park.
The deal officially closed last week.
THPRD and Beaverton School District leaders signed an intergovernmental agreement last year that addresses shared access, shared parking and other issues besides the property sale.
“This acquisition means we’ll be able to make Cedar Hills Park even better for the community,” said Doug Menke, THPRD general manager. “We want to thank our longtime partners at the school district.”
"By working together, we are going to be making significant improvements in this area that will benefit our children and the community,” said Beaverton School District Superintendent Jeff Rose. “These park and play area improvements will be complementary to the William Walker Elementary campus when it is rebuilt in the next several years. Our students deserve an environment that facilitates safe play and learning during the school day and beyond."
THPRD’s plan for Cedar Hills Park includes two full-size, multipurpose, synthetic turf sports fields with lights; a splash pad water play area; play equipment; permanent restrooms; a picnic area; walking path; and a community garden.
Redevelopment of the site will be funded by THPRD’s 2008 voter-approved bond measure. Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in early 2016 and finish by spring 2017.
