THPRD seeking volunteer applicants for advisory committees

Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District is now accepting applicants for positions on two volunteer advisory committees. These committees will work directly with THPRD’s Board of Directors to provide public guidance that will help shape the district’s long-term planning efforts.

Applications will be accepted through Nov. 5 – via thprd.org – for membership on the following committees:

• Parks & Facilities
• Programs & Events
• A third committee, Nature & Trails, is not accepting new applicants at this time.

Successful applicants will be appointed to a two- or three-year term. Evening meetings will be held on the third Tuesday each month, beginning Jan. 19.

Earlier this year, THPRD’s Board of Directors approved a restructuring to differentiate informal fundraising “friends groups” from advisory committees, which will take aim at the broad goals established in the district’s Comprehensive Plan.

The three committees listed above replace eight advisory committees previously in place. In the new structure, each committee will include one appointed member of THPRD’s board.

“We want citizens to feel engaged and to be working on the most important items,” said Bruce Barbarasch, superintendent of natural resources and trails management. “By bringing board members into the room with citizens, we feel we’ll have a more focused group.”

The district will support its advisory committees by providing a handbook, guidelines and other materials, as well as goal-setting sessions and training opportunities.

“They’re investing in the park district. We want to invest in them,” Barbarasch said.
