Double bill at HMT highlights remaining summer concerts
August 02, 2013
More than half of the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District’s summer concert series is complete, but there’s still time for music lovers to catch three free shows in August featuring high-quality performers in a relaxed park setting.
The biggest one is the next one, THPRD’s annual “Groovin’ on the Grass” concert on Aug. 10 at the Howard M. Terpenning Recreation Complex, 158th and Walker Road, Beaverton. The Park District will present an exciting double bill of Quarterflash and Stone in Love.
Quarterflash hit it big in 1981 with “Harden My Heart,” written by Marv Ross and sung by his wife, Rindy. They still delight audiences with their sax-heavy blend of rock and pop. Stone in Love is a high-energy, Portland-based band that plays the songs of Journey, one of the top-selling rock groups of all time.
Gates open at 4 p.m. and music starts at 5 on sports fields behind THPRD’s Athletic Center. Food, wine and beer will be available for purchase.
Other August concerts presented by THPRD feature Curtis Salgado and Sara Jackson-Holman (Aug. 15 at Raleigh Park, 3500 SW 78th Avenue) and the Patrick Lamb Band (Aug. 22 at Cedar Mill Park, 10385 NW Cornell Road).
Salgado has been mixing blues, funk and rhythm and blues since the late '60s. The former co-star of the Robert Cray Band has released eight solo albums since 1991 and earlier this year won three major industry awards, including Soul Blues Male Artist of the Year and B.B. King Entertainer of the Year.
Jackson-Holman is a talented pianist, singer and songwriter who has drawn comparisons to Adele, Amy Winehouse and Feist.
Patrick Lamb paid his dues playing roadhouse music in the rural south, where his influences included James Brown, Stevie Wonder and Ray Charles. Today he fuses funk, soul, R&B, and jazz to create a unique, crowd-pleasing sound.
The Raleigh Park and Cedar Mill Park shows will run from 6 to 8 p.m. In addition to music for adults, THPRD will offer fun activities for children at both sites, which is standard for Park District concerts in the park.
